LIFE IN HACKNEY
Life at St John’s fully reflects life in Hackney, with a great desire to make Jesus Christ known. People come from all over the world and make St John’s their place of belonging. Our Mission Action Plan, which we have called the St John-at- Hackney Project is being realised and, following lots of discussions, is now becoming a reality.
PROJECTS IN HACKNEY
We are now developing our work with young people. We have both a healthy eating club, as well as a youth club for older children- not to mention 5 clubs on Sunday mornings! For older people, we are developing a lunch club as an initial support, and are keen to watch this flourish. We have also been offering shelter for the homeless as part of the Hackney Winter Night Shelter scheme. For more information, please see here: www.hwns.org.uk
PEOPLE IN HACKNEY
In addition, we have, for centuries, been a place where the people of Hackney have offered celebration and consolation. We hold baptisms, weddings, funerals, memorial services, civic occasions such as the Remembrance Day service or the Speaker of Hackney's Civic Service. We remain an honest soul space for Hackney- nourishing and nurturing those parts of our lives which can so easily get neglected with disastrous consequences.
SPACES IN HACKNEY
Our building is phenomenal. Built to seat 2,200 people, this building can now be used for all sorts of acts of worship, but also great community events. These spaces have been used recently for recordings, for Job fairs, as a health and medical centre and as a place to discern and discover our Hackney heritage together. The very soul of Hackney emerges from these hallowed walls and this churchyard, which in itself is the largest green space in Hackney Central. CHARITY IN HACKNEY
We also support the Hackney Parochial Charities, The St John-at-Hackney Joint Estates Charity, and the Bishop Wood and Dr Spurstowe Almshouses Charity. Between them, they maintain good quality property, with any subsequent income being used for the relief of poverty in Hackney.
FAIRTRADE IN HACKNEY
Along with all of the above, we have recently been granted Fairtrade Status as a church. This sense of justice and fairness underpins much of what we do. St John’s is an inclusive church, which seeks to support and love the whole of this neighbourhood.
Come and be part of that St John’s revolution that is Jesus Christ. |
